I wasn't sure about this book going in (I knew there was a chapter written entirely in PowerPoint, clearly a cause for concern), but it really grew on me. In Jennifer Egans A Visit from the Goon Squad, she was able to use time, memory and her characters in a way that has never before been seen. This is the main theme of the story, and the goon squad referred to in the title is time. Admittedly, I am a bit weary of Pulitzer prize winners. People will try to change you, Rhea, Lou goes. Many of the reviews I've read say the stories center around Bennie and/or Sasha but I personally feel that Lou can be central as well. I read Beloved recently and that reaffirmed my general avoidance. But the freckles, I go, and my throat gets that ache. When you finish reading a book of a stature such as “A Visit from the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan, you sit down, breathe and keep breathing, till the breath paces itself out and you aren't gasping anymore. Egan pushes the boundaries of what can reasonably be called a “novel” with this intricately structured and densely-linked set of stories.
